Learn how to pack fragile items safely for international shipping and avoid damage during transit. Practical tips from courier experts
1. Choose the Right Box
Always use a sturdy, new corrugated box rather than a reused one — repeated use weakens cardboard and increases the risk of collapse during transit. The box should be slightly larger than your item to leave room for cushioning material on all sides.
2. Wrap Each Item Individually
Wrap fragile items like glassware, ceramics, or electronics individually in bubble wrap, securing it with tape rather than relying on loose wrapping. If you’re shipping multiple items in one box, wrap and separate them so they don’t knock against each other.
3. Fill Empty Spaces Completely
Empty space inside a box is one of the biggest causes of damage. Use packing peanuts, crumpled paper, or foam inserts to fill every gap, so nothing shifts during handling or transport.
4. Use the “Double Box” Method for Extra-Fragile Items
For particularly delicate items — like glass decor or electronics — place the wrapped item in a smaller box, then place that box inside a larger one with cushioning material in between. This double layer of protection absorbs shocks far better than single boxing.
5. Seal and Label Properly
Use strong packing tape along all box seams, and clearly label the package as “Fragile” so it receives careful handling throughout its journey. Accurate labeling also helps our team apply extra care during pickup and sorting — check our guide on documents required for international courier shipping to make sure your paperwork is equally accurate.
6. Consider Shipping Insurance
For high-value fragile items, it’s worth asking about shipping insurance for added peace of mind. Most reputable couriers, including DH, recommend insurance for valuable or delicate shipments as standard practice.
